Thomas Gerbasi, UFC – The walk into the Octagon. For some, the trek up those final four steps presents ample time to panic; for others, it’s a signal that it’s time to perform. For Daniel ‘Ninja’ Roberts, it’s when he flips the switch from nice guy to fighter, and by the time he steps through the doorway, he’s not walking into competition – he’s jumping in.

March 15, 2010 – 8:31 am | No Comment

Originally found at http://cibolabeacon.com/ Written By Mark Teshima A lifetime of achievements was recognized earlier this month when Master Antionette Chavez became the latest Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee, at an annual awards banquet held in Las Vegas, Nev. Chavez’ road to the hall of fame started in Grants, where she was born and raised, with the simple act of signing up for karate classes with a couple of cousins at age 11. She worked hard, and through her high school years quickly gained respect in the world of martial arts tournaments. 1984 became a pivotal year for Chavez when her father passed. She found her own way through college with scholarships, but bills still had to be paid for as well as classes with her new instructor, Greg Polland. Polland offered a new style of karate and was an elite fighter in the country. One day at a car wash, she was approached by a woman looking for more classes to fill the studio. Chavez began teaching karate …

The Mavs didn’t disappoint. On its own campus, UNO amassed 131 total points over the two-day Championships, far out-pacing (and almost doubling) second-place Augustana (SD) for the Mavericks’ second straight national championship. D-II Sidebar: Despite Adversity, Mavs Still Roll
March 14, 2010 – 1:58 am | No Comment

By John Fey Special to NCAA.com OMAHA, Neb. – The storm warnings were sent out the day before the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships began. Look out for Nebraska-Omaha, the opposing coaches said. “For them not to win nationals, they’d have to have half their team wrestle terrible,” Nebraska-Kearney coach Marc Bauer said at the pre-tournament press conference. “And something like that doesn’t happen very often.” Jason Reitmeier, coach of third-ranked Augustana (S.D.) College said: “They’ve got to have some guys slip, and the rest of us have to compete at the highest level.” Well, Nebraska-Omaha did slip – but only during Saturday night’s final round. The Mavericks won just one individual title out of five bouts but still ran away with the team title before the evening session began. It was Nebraska-Omaha’s fifth championship in the last seven years and second straight. Newberry …

Emotion. Excitement. And that was just from among the standing-room-only crowd at Nebraska-Omaha’s Sapp Fieldhouse during Friday’s opening rounds of the NCAA Division II wrestling tournament. The action on the six mats held even more. By the end of the day, the University of Nebraska at Omaha placed itself in position to win a second straight national championship and seventh in school history. The host team suffered a couple of minor disappointments the opening day but still advanced seven wrestlers into Saturday’s championship semifinal and another in the consolation round. Nebraska-Omaha piled up 57 points to enjoy a 25.5-point cushion over second-place St. Cloud (Minn.) State University. “We lost a couple of matches,” …

D-II Sidebar: Griffin Still Alive In Title Defense
March 13, 2010 – 2:35 am | No Comment

By John Fey Special to NCAA.com OMAHA, Neb. – Keeno Griffin is just one victory away from being right where he expected to be. The Newberry (S.C.) College 197-pounder opened defense of his national wrestling title Friday with two wins and is now 31-1 going into Saturday’s semifinal round. But both wins during the first two rounds of the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships at Sapp Fieldhouse didn’t come easy. Griffin edged Kyle Sand of Augustana (S.D.) College 3-2 in his opening match before staving off Matthew Meuleners of Northern State University (Aberdeen, S.D.) by a 5-3 score. Now the only wrestler standing in Griffin’s way into Saturday’s 197-pound final is Donovan McMahill of Western State College (Gunnison, Colo.). The two square off in Saturday morning’s semifinals. If Griffin was sweating a bit extra after his two narrow wins, he didn’t show it. Moments after beating Meuleners in the quarterfinals, he said confidence wasn’t lacking heading into his second bout of the tournament. “I felt…
