Showtime bantamweight tournament set; semis are Dec. 11

Four of the top bantamweights in the world — Vic Darchinyan, Yonnhy Perez, Joseph Agbeko and Abner Mares — will be part of a single-elimination tournament on Showtime, which finalized the event Wednesday, promoter Gary Shaw told ESPN.com. The semifinals will take place in Leon, Mexico, on Dec. 11. Darchinyan, the junior bantamweight champion, who is staying at bantamweight after winning a fight in the division in May, will face Mares in the main event. Perez will defend his 118-pound title in a mandatory rematch against former titlist Joseph Agbeko in the co-feature. The winners are slated to meet in the first quarter of 2011 or early in the second quarter, Shaw said. McHenry’s Long wins national gold in Taekwondo

Jessica Long won the gold medal in the Taekwondo Individual Forms Competition at the AAU Junior Olympic Games held July 31-Aug. 7 in Hampton Roads, Va. Long, of McHenry, won in the 10 and 11-year-old advanced division. She also was the Illinois state champion. “She competed against the best in the country,” said Jerry Keys, owner of Key’s Martial Arts Academy, where Long trains. “It’s a real big deal.” Long also qualified for the AAU national tournament a year ago, but the results this year were dramatically different. “She didn’t do too well,” Keys said of Long’s performance last year. “I think nerves got a hold of her.” That experience might have played a part in her desire to push herself to train harder.
