New Yorker Nick Pace: Sleep In Strange Places, Fight Well Sep-7-2010 By Frank Curreri Fighters constantly jockey for the slightest edge over their competitors. Even in their sleep. BJ Penn and Rich Franklin have been known to recharge nightly in hyperbaric chambers during training. Miguel Torres often hunkers down in his gym for weeks on end, separating himself from distractions and steeling his spirit for battle. Donald Cerrone used to catch his shuteye in a room atop Greg Jackson’s martial arts school in New Mexico. But the precise spot where Nick Pace lays his head trumps them all. “I’ve got my air mattress here,” said the unbeaten 23-year-old, who trains three times a day at Tiger Schulmann’s MMA school in Elmwood Park, N.J. “I’m sleeping in the cage with my air mattress.” The up and coming New Yorker offers this tidbit with great nonchalance, as if it were an entirely rational act. CEDAR RAPIDS – Once again, it is a two-team race is at the top of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. Augsburg advanced three wrestlers to Saturday night’s title round at the U.S. Cellular Center, and they were joined by a surprising team in the chase for the team championship.

Not Wartburg, but Wisconsin-La Crosse, which also advanced three wrestlers. Bebeto Yewah (133), Michael Schmitz (174) and defending champion Dan Laurent (285) will all try for individual titles. That matches Augsburg’s numbers for the finals as the Auggies sent three of their six semifinalists, Paul Bjorkstrand (133), Tony Valek (149) and Orlando Ponce (165) into the finals.

Wartburg had four wrestlers still in the hunt for individual titles at the start of the early session but advanced only two. Coe, Ithaca, Ohio Northern and Delaware Valley were the other teams with at least two semifinal wrestlers in Saturday’s round. Of these four schools, only Delaware Valley did not advance a wrestler to the finals.

The Auggies continue to hold the overall team lead with 107.5 points.
