“I want to be a fighter.” With that sentence, uttered by David Mitchell as he stepped into David Terrell’s Nor Cal Fighting Alliance gym in Santa Rosa, California for the first time in 2005, we could just say “and the rest is history,” considering that “Daudi” is making his UFC debut on Wednesday in Austin, Texas. But nothing is ever that cut and dried, and from the time of those first fighting words, Mitchell has gone through a lifetime’s worth of experiences to prepare him not only to become a fighter, but a UFC fighter. And as far as the 30-year old Berkeley native is concerned, his Octagon debut is coming right on time. “I feel like it’s just right,” he said. “There were times early in my career when I thought I was ready to go, but I think having more experience is better and I’m not getting any younger, so later wouldn’t be an advantage either. I feel like this is the perfect time.” Getting here wasn’t going to be easy though, and Mitchell, who was first inspired by Chuck Liddell’s knockout of Tito Ortiz in 2004, found …

Victor Darchinyan wins decision, retains WBA, WBC super flyweight titles

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — Australian Victor Darchinyan scored an unanimous decision against Rodrigo Guerrero of Mexico City to retain his WBC and WBA super flyweight titles Saturday night at The Show inside the Agua Caliente Casino.

The judges scored the bout 118-110, 117-111 and 120-108.

Darchinyan (34-2-1, 27 KOs), known for his spectacular knockouts, couldn’t put down the tough Guerrero, whose head was rocked back numerous times. The only time Guerrero (13-2-1) went down was from a slip at the start of the 10th round.

Late in the bout, Darchinyan landed multiple heavy punches against Guerrero, even knocking out the challenger’s mouthpiece in the seventh round.

In the co-main event, Australian Lenny Zappavigna (23-0, 15 KOs) claimed the vacant IBO lightweight championship with an unanimous decision over Fernando Angulo (22-7, 14 KOs), who came into the bout three pounds overweight.

Angulo, from Caracas, Venezuela, could not have won the title because he failed to make weight.
