New Yorker Nick Pace: Sleep In Strange Places, Fight Well Sep-7-2010 By Frank Curreri Fighters constantly jockey for the slightest edge over their competitors. Even in their sleep. BJ Penn and Rich Franklin have been known to recharge nightly in hyperbaric chambers during training. Miguel Torres often hunkers down in his gym for weeks on end, separating himself from distractions and steeling his spirit for battle. Donald Cerrone used to catch his shuteye in a room atop Greg Jackson’s martial arts school in New Mexico. Judge dismisses felony coercion charge in battery case against Roger Mayweather

Submitted by FightNewsUSA on March 9, 2010 – 7:27 pmNo Comment

LAS VEGAS — A court clerk says a judge dismissed a felony coercion charge against boxing trainer Roger Mayweather, who faces trial June 1 on allegations that he beat and choked a female boxer at a Las Vegas apartment he owned.

The 48-year-old Mayweather still faces battery-strangulation and battery causing substantial bodily harm charges carrying the possibility of up to 10 years in prison.

Mayweather’s lawyer, Jack Buchanan, couldn’t convince Clark County District Court Judge Valerie Adair on Tuesday to dismiss the other charges.

Buchanan has cited inconsistencies in the preliminary hearing testimony of Melissa St. Vil, a 26-year-old fighter Mayweather is accused of attacking last August.

Mayweather is a former boxer who trains fighters in Las Vegas including his undefeated 33-year-old nephew, Floyd Mayweather Jr. He remains free on $13,000 bail.
